Bell, D.O.

Medical Doctor

Author

Medical and Health Care Industry Expert

Since his childhood Dr. Herman Bell, D.O. ( Doctor of Osteopathy ) was nurtured and developed by his father, family, teachers and minister to be a leader. His father, John Bell Sr., was his first mentor. As a leader John Bell established the first Black Mason and Eastern Star chapters in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was one of the first Blacks to work at Standard Oil (ESSO), when the electrical utilities division was known as Gulf States and was instrumental in getting many other Black men and their families to work at Gulf States. Herman's early childhood was shaped by Southern segregation and he witnessed his parents' involvement in the Baton Rouge bus boycott of 1953. In 1956 his community was immersed in the struggle for equality, to desegregate schools and public facilities. John Bell pushed his son Herman to pursue excellence and to contribute his skill set to the growth and progress of his people and community. Consequently Herman Bell above all else is a man committed to the health and wellness of his community.

Herman excelled academically and overcame the many perils life presented achieving his life long desire to practice medicine. Knowing that he had made a bad decision at sixteen, to drop out of school after completing the ninth grade, became a hobo by freight train to Los Angeles, was homeless for fifteen months on skid row, spent two years in Vietnam; returned home to Los Angeles, began studying at West Los Angeles Jr. College in 1972 and completed medical college in 1983. Since then he has never looked back. His accomplishments are unparalleled and provide the landscape for a richly textured orator.

His most recent achievement is his autobiography "String of Perils, from Hobo to D.O.", the story of a man's determination to excel in spite of the tumultuous racist climate in America. The book takes the reader from his youth in Baton Rouge; to his descent to homelessness, to his success as a licensed Osteopathic Family Physician and Surgeon.

Dr. Bell's expertise has taken him from the hospital to the medical office, to the classroom, to the boardroom where he is always well received. The mixture of his southern roots and intrinsic political knowledge arms him with an insight that resonates with his patients, clients, students, associates, and colleagues. His mission to help others achieve overall good health and well-being and his passion for science, is what makes him such a wonderful and much sought after doctor, and also fuels his oratory delivery. Herman has always demonstrated a passion for a sense of fairness and justice. In his undergraduate studies, he was at the forefront of student advocacy, promoting and pushing for the improvement of study and test preparation. During medical school, he championed his freshman class; at the College Osteopathic Medicine Pacific there was an incident of discrepancy that transpired regarding various questions and answers during final examinations. He was one of the students involved, where their grades were unfairly recorded. His response was for his class to create a test challenge committee. Herman's position was, "We are students, not children, just because they say the answer is wrong, doesn't mean it's wrong." On the first test challenge by the students, there were in fact multiple mis-keyed answers on the test. This action is indicative of whom Herman Bell is; by him and others, creating a formal test challenge process for his class, is testimony to the type of man Herman is.
